HANDS-ON

HVACR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING

A TWO-DAY WORKSHOP

Workshop Fee: $295 Per Person. Includes take-home workbook.

This 2-day workshop, which includes a fundamentals overview and information on advanced troubleshooting concepts is designed for service technicians and facility maintenance personnel who are responsible for maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of residential and light commercial air-conditioning and heating systems. Eighty-five percent of the problems related to HVACR systems are electrically related, and there are two basic philosophies related to electrical troubleshooting:

1. HVACR electrical system troubleshooting is a process of systematically eliminating the possibilities.

2. With an understanding of what "right" is in the first place, a technician can determine what is wrong with an air conditioning system when it stops functioning.

Possessing the skills to troubleshoot and diagnose electrical problems related to compressors, motors, elements and electric ignition systems is a must for facility maintenance and service technicians. In this workshop, participants will wire circuits, use diagrams to troubleshoot electrical problems, and test electrical components with both digital and analog meters.

Included in this 2-day workshop is a detailed and illustrated take-home workbook that visually and descriptively explains how to perform HVACR electrical system troubleshooting. This information can be used later as reference material when performing on-the-job maintenance.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR…

Jim Johnson has been a full-time technician as well as a full-time trade school and community college instructor and administrator in the refrigeration, HVAC/R and appliance fields since 1973. He has facilitated over 200 training seminars in the HVAC/R electrical and refrigeration areas alone, as well as many other workshops in both technical and non-technical areas.

Jim takes the time to explain theory to you, but it’s not dull or boring. You learn what you need to know and understand what you need to understand because Jim explains it in a clear, simple manner that eliminates the mystery behind the subjects of electricity and troubleshooting. His background includes a satellite training network for HVAC/R and appliance technicians and the development and presentation of more than 50 video training sessions. Many of the video programs he has written, developed and presented contain interactive workbooks that are used by colleges and trade schools around the nation as part of their HVACR training program.

He is nationally recognized as one of the HVAC/R and appliance industry’s best-known technical writer and instructor, having written four textbooks for the HVAC/R industry and 10 technician handbooks… but he is quick to caution people that they shouldn’t be too impressed by that fact.

"Book learning is good stuff, no doubt about it," he says, "but until you put that knowledge to practical use, it isn’t worth much."

Jim is also a regular columnist for Indoor Comfort News and he has been providing their troubleshooting feature for over eight years. He has also written more than 200 feature articles for trade magazines.

Jim’s favorite saying?

"This stuff ain’t rocket science."

Jim allows plenty of time for questions and he encourages everyone in attendance to ask about anything they need to ask about. Students and workshop participants over the years have consistently rated Jim’s ability to communicate and explain things clearly as excellent. He is a member of RSES and ACCA, and is NBI-Certified as a Residential and Light Commercial Air Balancing and Diagnostic Technician.
